A well-preserved archaeological site set in the Sonoran Desert, Tonto National Monument features two authentic Salado cliff dwellings, occupied during the 13th through the 15th centuries. There is a 1/2-mile trail that takes visitors to the Lower Cliff Dwelling Area, and a longer 3-mile round-trip trail that leads to the Upper Cliff Dwelling, open only during the summer months and by reservation. The visitors center provides a good introduction to the area and the people that once occupied its cliffs, and it is located just off the highway about three miles east of the town of Roosevelt.
Open daily 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Entry fee: Adults $3; Children under 16 are free.
